It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Your son is over at a friend’s house and they find an unsecured gun. They start playing with it, and one shoots the other or themselves. Sadly, it’s a reality that affects many families across the United States.

Recent shooting incidents

In Houston, in mid-February, a 5-year-old accidently shot a four-year-old, and fortunately, the four-year-old only had minor injuries. However, many young gun shooting victims are not so lucky. Earlier in February, a three-year-old died in Forth Worth after finding a gun at a relative’s home and playing with it. Many times, in these situations, police don’t file charges because they consider the shootings accidental.

A patient doesn’t ever expect that their medical care team will treat them in a manner that results in a worse injury than they originally had. Unfortunately, there are cases when a patient will suffer harm at the expense of their doctors or nurses. Some of the things that can lead to this are known as “never-events.”

A never-event is something that happens that shouldn’t happen under any circumstances. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMMS) have specific incidents that it notes fall under the category of never-events. When these occur, patients can suffer great harm.

Never-events fall under three broad categories – case management, surgical events and medical devices and products. The tie that binds all these is that they could have been prevented if proper protocol was followed as intended.

If you drive northwest of downtown for about 25 miles, you’ll arrive in Cypress, an unincorporated community entirely within Houston’s city limits. The city-within-a-city is home to a bar that’s at the center of a personal injury lawsuit filed by a man who suffered serious injuries in a violent crash that also killed his girlfriend.

The lawsuit alleges that the World of Beer in Cypress over-served the driver who reportedly caused the deadly wreck. After the late-January crash, the driver apparently told law enforcement officers that he had consumed six beers and four shots at the bar before he climbed behind the wheel of his pick-up.

The suspected DWI/DUI driver is out on bail after his arrest on charges of charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxicated assault. The lawsuit says the suspect not only drank at World of Beer, he was also an employee.

You have been awaiting the birth of your child for months. You and your spouse bought a crib, decorated the nursey and now have all the baby gear you need. Now, it’s time to wait for that baby to come. You likely are nervous about giving birth, hoping you or your baby won’t have complications.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Sometimes, through doctor error, babies are born with birth injuries. In fact, out of every 1,000 infants born in the United States, up to 8 of them are born with a birth injury.

Some common birth injuries that require treatment or have long-lasting effects include the following:

The Texas native’s first brush with stardom was in 1973’s cult classic, “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” but it wasn’t until the release of the “Bat Out of Hell” album four years later that Michael Lee Aday – better known as Meat Loaf – became a real star on his own. While his career has had its share of ups and downs, none of the low points rival the fall he took in May of last year in Texas.

The singer broke his collarbone in a fall from a stage at a Hyatt hotel in Dallas. He recently filed a premises liability lawsuit against the hospitality company. Aday named both Hyatt and the company that sponsored the convention at which he was to perform in his lawsuit.

According to Aday, the Hyatt’s stage had dark curtains hanging at the edge of the back of the stage. The curtains created an illusion that the stage is larger than it is in reality. So when the 72-year-old singer walked up to the curtains at the end of a Q-and-A session, he fell off of the stage and was badly injured.
